Therapy Resources for Each Branch

If you are looking for non-emergency mental health related services, here is a list of services by branch as well as a list of outside services utilizing Tricare that those who are spouses or dependents can use. Non-Base Related Therapy: For most dependents (spouses and children), you can use your Tricare Select or Prime to gain access to many therapists across the US. Popular sites to find a good therapist include:

  • Psychology Today https://www.psychologytoday.com/us [Type in “tricare” under your insurance to search for therapists in your area. This is a great way to find private practice based therapists who you can read full bio’s for and have more say over who you would like to see. Many (like myself) do a free intro call.

  • Cohen Center: https://www.cohenveteransnetwork.org/our-care/ Many states have a Cohen Center where you can receive therapy services from therapists specializing in military. This includes children and couples counseling.

  • Give an Hour: giveanhour.org Connects veterans, service members, and families to free mental health care

  • Telemynd https://www.telemynd.com/ This is a site that will provide you with a therapist match. They take Tricare.

  • Rula https://www.rula.com/ Tricare WEST only. Similar to Telemynd, you can book directly into a providers schedule. Individuals, couples or family.

  • Talkspace https://www.talkspace.com/ Similar to Telemnd and Rula, this is a concierge service offering mental health therapists via matching you with a therapist.

  • Open Path Collective https://openpathcollective.org/ If you are NOT a dependent and do not have Tricare but still need low cost therapy, Open Path is an option. These therapists range from 30-70 dollars a session.

  • Sliding Scale: You can ALWAYS ask a therapist if they have “sliding scale” options open. You can find those therapists who might take sliding scale on Psychology Today. They would not be using your insurance, so you would be paying out of pocket.

  • Associates: You can choose to see a pre-licensed Associate (their credentials will look like AMFT, APCC, ACSW, etc). This means they are working towards their states requirements for licensing hours but have either not yet reached their hours or they have reached them but have not taken or passed their board exams yet. Associates typically charge less than licensed clinicians. You can also find these on Psychology Today.

NOTE: I prefer to refer people to Psychology Today. Large corporations like Telemynd and Rula tend to be infamous for underpaying therapists. I prefer to support independent therapists through Pyschology Today personally. ALWAYS check your coverage before engaging in services. Your therapist should also be checking your coverage in order to bill Tricare as well.

Couples/Children

Most of the sites above offer services for individuals, couples and children. Click through above to find which ones will offer couples support. Please note, when you are looking for couples counseling, if you are dual military for the most part you will need to go through your command/medical system depending on the branch for a referral out in the community.

If you are a dependent who is on Tricare and not active duty, you can request therapy at most of the sites above for the couple using your own Tricare beneficiary information. When searching, you will use the beneficiary ID info as AD SM’s typically (not in all cases) need a referral to initiate, but for the most part spouses do not. This could be subject to change and may be branch specific.
